If you ask most people what sacha inchi is, you'll get blank stares. Even in the natural beauty world, it's relatively unknown outside of South America. But let me tell you, this oil is a treasure trove for your skin.
In Peru and other parts of the Amazon, sacha inchi (Plukenetia volubilis) has been cultivated for centuries. It's also called "Inca peanut" or "Inca nut," though it's not actually a nut—it's a seed from a star-shaped pod that grows on a vine in the Amazon rainforest.
The seeds are pressed into an oil that boasts one of the highest concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids you can find in a plant. We’re talking about 50% omega-3 content. For context, that’s significantly higher than most fish oils. So what does that mean for your skin? A lot, actually.
What is Sacha Inchi Oil?
Sacha inchi oil comes from the seeds of the sacha inchi plant, a perennial vine native to the Amazon basin—primarily Peru, but also found in parts of Colombia, Ecuador, and Brazil. The fruit looks like a green star with 4-7 points, and inside each point is a seed that's cold-pressed to extract the oil.
The oil itself is light amber in color, has a subtle nutty scent, and absorbs quickly into the skin. But what makes it different from most plant oils is its fatty acid composition: around 50% alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3), 35% linoleic acid (omega-6), and smaller amounts of omega-9. That omega-3 content is what sets it apart.
Sacha Inchi Oil Benefits for Your Skin

Highest Plant-Based Source of Omega-3
Your skin needs essential fatty acids—particularly omega-3 and omega-6—to function properly. These fatty acids are components of your skin's lipid barrier, the layer that keeps moisture in and irritants out. Most people get plenty of omega-6 from their diet and skincare (it's in sunflower oil, safflower oil, and many other common oils). But omega-3? Much harder to come by, especially in plant-based forms.
Sacha inchi oil delivers omega-3 fatty acids directly to your skin, where they help strengthen the barrier, reduce water loss, and keep skin resilient. If your skin feels chronically dry or reactive, there's a good chance it needs more omega-3s.
Repairs Compromised Skin Barrier
When your skin barrier is damaged—from over-exfoliation, harsh products, environmental stress, or just genetics—you'll notice. Your skin feels tight, gets irritated easily, doesn't hold moisture well, and might develop redness or flaking.
Sacha inchi oil helps repair that damage. The high concentration of essential fatty acids gives your skin exactly what it needs to rebuild its protective layer. It's not an overnight fix, but with consistent use, you'll notice your skin feels stronger and more comfortable.
Improves Skin Elasticity
The omega-3 fatty acids in sacha inchi oil also support collagen and elastin production. This means your skin maintains its firmness and bounce better over time. It's not going to erase deep wrinkles, but it does help keep skin looking healthy and resilient as you age.
Anti-Inflammatory and Calming
Omega-3s are naturally anti-inflammatory, which is why sacha inchi oil works well for sensitive, reactive, or irritated skin. If you deal with redness, eczema, psoriasis, or just skin that gets angry easily, the anti-inflammatory properties can help calm things down.
Lightweight and Fast-Absorbing
Despite being rich in fatty acids, sacha inchi oil doesn't feel heavy. It has a light texture that sinks into skin quickly without leaving a greasy film. This makes it ideal for body oils where you want deep nourishment but don't want to feel like you're coated in oil.
Non-Comedogenic
Sacha inchi oil has a comedogenic rating of 1 (on a scale of 0-5), meaning it's very unlikely to clog pores. The balanced omega profile actually helps regulate sebum production, so it works for different skin types—not just dry skin.
Rich in Vitamin E and Antioxidants
Beyond the fatty acids, sacha inchi oil contains high levels of vitamin E (tocopherols) and other antioxidants that protect skin from environmental damage. Vitamin E is also essential for skin repair and helps maintain moisture.
How to Use Sacha Inchi Oil
Sacha inchi oil works the same way as any body oil—best applied to damp skin after showering. I use it in combination with other oils (like in our Savia Body Oil blend) because I think oils work better together than alone. But if you're using pure sacha inchi oil, here's how:
On damp skin: Apply 3-5 drops right after your shower while skin is still wet. The water helps it spread and absorb faster.
Layered over lotion: If you prefer a moisturizer, apply sacha inchi oil on top as a final sealing step. This locks everything in and gives your skin extra barrier support.
For problem areas: Massage into areas that are especially dry, irritated, or need extra help—elbows, knees, any patches of eczema or psoriasis.
Daily use: Because it's lightweight and absorbs quickly, you can use it every day without feeling greasy. Consistency is what gets results with barrier repair—sporadic use won't do much.
Why I Include Sacha Inchi in Savia Body Oil

When I was formulating Savia, I knew I wanted sacha inchi oil in the blend.
Here's why:
First, the omega-3 content complements the omega-6 from maracuja oil. Together, they give your skin a balanced profile of essential fatty acids—exactly what it needs to build and maintain a healthy barrier.
Second, sacha inchi has been used in Peru for centuries, not just for food but also for skin. It's not a trendy ingredient someone invented last year—it has a real history of traditional use.
Third, it works. I tested dozens of oil combinations, and the ones with sacha inchi consistently felt better on skin and absorbed faster. The texture was right, the skin feel was right, and over time, my skin looked and felt healthier.
That's what I care about—does it actually do something? Sacha inchi does.

The Bottom Line on Sacha Inchi Oil
Sacha inchi oil is one of the best plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids, making it especially useful for skin barrier repair, elasticity, and calming inflammation. It's lightweight, fast-absorbing, and suitable for most skin types.
If your skin feels perpetually dry, sensitive, or reactive—or if you just want to maintain healthy skin long-term—sacha inchi oil is worth trying. It's not magic, but it gives your skin the building blocks it needs to repair and protect itself.
That's why it's one of the four South American botanical oils at the heart of Savia Body Oil—because it works, and because it has centuries of traditional use behind it.
