The fashion industry is facing an important challenge—to reduce its environmental footprint caused by fast fashion, synthetic materials, and waste. In fact, this sector accounts for 8-10% of the world's total carbon emissions—more than aviation and shipping put together! And in the US alone, 11.3 million tons of textile waste are produced each year: that translates to 2,150 pieces of clothing per second! These figures are mindboggling when you think about their global implications.

The fashion industry is finally beginning to recognize and address its role in the sustainability crisis. Vogue UK recently published an article about how fashion could be more sustainable. We believe some of these trends have tremendous potential for impactful change.

Nonetheless, much work remains before these goals can be achieved - it's not only up to those within the fashion sector but all of us as consumers too! Each one of us has a responsibility to help tackle this issue head-on; so let’s do our part today by investing responsibly and making more conscious shopping decisions!

Here are the sustainability trends we're most excited for:

Garment Recycling - Despite the fact that textiles make up an astounding 8% of the global waste stream, a meager 1% are actually recycled and re-purposed into new clothing. This scarcity is due to the complexity associated with recycling interwoven fabrics like cotton polyester blends - which are composed of numerous combinations of fibers; requiring sophisticated processes to deconstruct these threads so they can be reused.

Advancing technology for garment recycling is critical in the pursuit of a more sustainable future. By creating innovative solutions, the fashion industry can provide consumers with an easy and efficient way to recycle their clothes and reduce waste. As modern technologies continue to evolve, so too will our commitment to environmental protection through clothing reclamation efforts.

Calling Out Green Washing

While we applaud brands that tout their sustainable practices, it's important to be wary of greenwashing. This term is used to identify brands that make deceptive statements about their products being more eco-friendly than they really are.

Governments and regulators are cracking down on this deceptive practice by holding brands accountable for their environmental claims, ensuring environmental responsibility is taken seriously and not used as just another marketing ploy.

As consumers, we need to be aware of misleading marketing claims that might do us more harm than good. We should direct our hard-earned money towards brands that live up to their sustainability promises and genuinely walk the talk.

Reevaluating the supply chain

To cultivate more green practices, fashion companies must reevaluate their entire supply chain and its effect on the planet. Although most of us simply consider the finished product when it comes to fashion, this impact can be sourced through every step in production. With a closer look at each vendor within these processes, we can strive to create sustainable clothing that is good for both people and our environment.

This means not only looking at the raw materials used in production but also the energy used to power factories and mills. As consumers, we need to dig a little deeper to question the resources used to produce our clothing and look for brands that have taken action to make their processes more sustainable.

The fashion industry has an essential role to play in transforming our planet. By embracing the green trends of garment recycling, calling out greenwashing, and reevaluating the supply chain, we can move forward toward a more sustainable future. Together, let's make sure that sustainability remains top-of-mind in all aspects of fashion!
