One of our favorite parts of the Christmas season is decorating our homes with festive holiday decorations. While some people might choose to buy new decorations every year, there are many ways that you can sustainably decorate your home by buying sustainable decorations, recycled materials, or by getting crafty and making your decorations. Here are four tips for creating a sustainable Christmas decoration scheme this year.
1. This holiday season, choose Christmas decorations that won't hurt the environment. Look for ornaments made out of sustainable materials such as jute or bamboo instead of plastic. If you're worried about breakable items with small kids in the house, go for fabric or wooden options.
We love these adorable felt tree decorations from Acacia Creations, www.acaciacreations.com.
I love these beautiful handmade woven stars from www.augustatrainingshop.com. They are handmade at the small profit shop that works with people with disabilities to train them in the art of woven products. Check out their beautiful work and consider donating to their establishment.

2. Make your own Christmas decorations – don’t be afraid to try crafting homemade decorations using materials you have lying around the house, old jars, wine bottles, old papers, fabric scraps, ribbons, and buttons. These can easily be turned into lovely decorations for your home.

3. Buy used Christmas decorations – if you don’t have the time or inclination to make your own, consider buying second hand decorations at charity shops or online auction sites instead of buying new ones as this helps to reduce waste and save money too!

4. Get in touch with nature by sprucing up your home with some greenery. You can find evergreens and other plants in nearby parks or woodlands, or even in your own backyard. To fully get into the festive mood, use winter foliage like pine branches, berries, and cones. Get creative and make your own wreaths and garlands out of natural items!

If this is all new to you, I recommend gradually changing at the pace that works best for you and your family. Reducing waste doesn't have to mean forgoing all the joys of the season--you can still have a happy holiday while being gentle on the planet.
